If they have qualified in more than one division, they must decide which division they will continue in. If they have entered in more than one division, and have qualified in one division, or have not qualified, and wish to continue competing, they must select one division in which to continue. PAPA reserves the right to "bump" a player to the next higher division, if in the opinion of PAPA officials they have demonstrated greater ability. As indicated, all divisions will be open to multiple re-entries, at the same cost as the original entry. There are no entry fees for Final rounds. SCORING and SEEDING Scoring in the qualifying rounds is based on the total cumulative point score of a player's round on the designated 8 games. Players will play alone on each game, under the supervision of PAPA scorekeepers. Scorekeepers shall record player's score on player's numbered score sheet after each game. Players are reminded not to move to next game, or to allow game to be reset until score has been properly recorded by scorekeepers. Scoring table officials shall tally total score and post top scores on the leader board, for each division. A total of 20 scores for each division will be posted. The leading 17 scores will advance to the Sunday rounds. The 18th, 19th, and 20th score will be alternates, and will enter the Sunday rounds if any of the top 17 players are not present at the start time of their round. In Doubles, the top 8 teams will advance to the Doubles A final rounds on Saturday night; teams 9-16 will advance to the Doubles B final rounds. Alternate teams 17, 18, and 19 will advance if higher teams are not present. The single leading scorer in the qualifying rounds in each division will receive a bye to the second semi-final round. This will be determined at the close of play on Saturday. All final round scoring shall be on the PAPA Competitive Scoring System - on each game, in each group of players, ten (10) points are to be awarded for first place, five (5) points are awarded for second place, one (1) point for third, and zero (0) points for fourth place. If the groups are of three players, scoring shall be 10 points, 5 points and 1 point. From the round of 17 singles participants, nine players (three groups of three) shall advance to the second semi-finals, based on PAPA scoring points. From the round of 8 advancing doubles teams in each Doubles division, four shall advance to the semi-finals, and two to the finals. From semi-finals, the top four PAPA scores will compete in the finals. In the event of ties, total numerical point score will be the tie-breaker. Advancing players shall be seeded on the basis of their total scores from qualifying rounds. In the singles divisions rounds, the players with highest advancing point total in their divisions will be seeded first and play the three lowest advancing point scorers. Second seeded player will play the next three lowest scorers, and so on. The same policy shall be in effect in subsequent rounds, or if the final fields or groups are larger or smaller. However, should unanticipated events or problems occur, resolution of said problems will fall under the authority of the PAPA commissioners and judges, and their decisions will be absolute and final. Malfunctions/Breakdowns: If there is an unexpected malfunction or breakdown; the judge(s) will rule at that time on how to proceed assuming that the machine cannot be repaired and returned to service. If possible, the current score(s) should be recorded prior to attempting to recover from any malfunction (including stuck balls). Affected player(s) will be allowed to continue from the point of malfunction and post the final score (provided the malfunction does not result in excess points) or may elect to re-start. Stuck Ball: A "stuck ball will be returned to the ball shooter / launcher or placed on the flipper if that is a possible or fairer resolution. If the ball cannot be unstuck in a fair manner; the affected game(s) may be replayed at each affected player's request, or the affected player(s) may elect to keep the score attained so far providing the stuck ball was not responsible for racking up extra points. Players must decide to keep, or replay, the game immediately. If the ball is stuck and you tilt trying to release it without notifying the judge(s), you LOSE it. If for some reason a game cannot be opened to unstick a stuck ball; then once the judges are present you may attempt to "nudge" the ball free and if you are able to free the ball without tilting you may continue play; and take the score for that game (even if you tilted). Alternatively, if you tilted while trying to free the ball under judge's supervision, you may elect to replay the game. You must inform the judges of your decision of how you want to proceed on a "tilted ball" prior to shooting any subsequent ball(s) in that game. If you fail to do so and you launch and "play" your next ball; then it shall be assumed that you wished to continue playing the current game. Note: "play" means you tried to do something with the ball in this case such as flipping the flippers or attempting in some way to save a draining ball. Note: If in Multi-Ball you manage to get a ball stuck; and knowingly continue to "play" the remaining ball(s) for more than 30 seconds without notifying the judges that you want the ball unstuck; then it will be assumed that you wanted to play that way as it was to your advantage. It will then be up to you to shake the ball loose on your own and risk tilting the machine. If you cannot unstick the ball on your own; the game shall be replayed from scratch. Tilt: End of ball in play. Additionally if you tilt another player(s)'s ball (while playing two or more players), the tilting player is disqualified and each individual affected, may elect at his/her option, to continue and take the final score or to re-start the game. Slam Tilt: Ends game(s) in progress. If you slam tilt causing premature end of another player's game your score for that game is forfeited. The affected player(s) may elect to replay their games or if possible take their current scores. On some games the scores are retained; if you slam tilt on your last ball and you are the last player, and scores are retained; then you may be given your score; if they are not retained your score will be zero. A player who continually slam tilts or otherwise massively abuses machines may be disqualified from a round or from the tournament, at the discretion of the judges. See section entitled Abuse of the Machine. Playing out of turn: A player playing out of turn (in a game of 2 or more players) will forfeit the game he/she played out of turn on and any points scored in that game. Game interruptions: Interruptions of a technical nature such as a power failure, software glitch, or major mechanical malfunction that shut down a game shall be handled as follows: Affected players are entitled to play a new game when the condition has cleared or been removed, if they so desire. If the basic score of a player is known at the time of interruption, i.e. a judge or scorekeeper has immediate visual knowledge of the score, the player may at his/her option may elect to post the score at an even score slightly below the last sighted score. For example, if a judge observes a 4 billion plus point score, immediately prior to a malfunction, the player will be offered the choice of accepting a 4 billion point game, or electing to re-play the game. If there should be some "fair" way of continuing an interrupted game from the point of interruption the player may elect to do so. In any event, for a score to be recorded, a JUDGE OR SCOREKEEPER MUST SEE IT. Bang Backs: The technique known as "bang back", or"death save", is not permitted in PAPA competition. If observed by scorekeeper or judge, the game on which the violation occurs will be forfeited, and a score of zero will be entered. Repeated violations will, at the discretion of the judges, be grounds for disqualification. Abuse of the machine: At the judges' discretion, players who regularly or dramatically subject the machine to "unreasonable or excessive" abuse, will be disqualified from the tournament. For most infractions, the player will be given one warning prior to being disqualified. Note: If, in the course of a game in progress, you can shake it and not tilt it, that is not "unreasonable or excessive". Judges will be not warn or disqualify unless a tilt occurs, or unless physical damage is done to the machine. Assistance during normal game play: A player may not receive physical assistance during singles or doubles game play from another person(s). In singles play, coaching or instruction is not permitted; in doubles, players may coach or advise their partners. Players must do all the "playing" by themselves. If a player walks away from the game after a drained ball and the ball should come back into play, only that player may physically save it. Players' responsibilities: Players are responsible for verifying that their scores are written down correctly by the score keepers. Players are responsible for staying by the machine so that it is not reset until the score(s) have been correctly recorded. Players are responsible for being ready to play a final match within five minutes when their turn is called unless they have arranged a break with the judges. Interference: A player may not interfere inany way with his/her opponent(s) game. Penalty to be decided by the judges, but may range from warnings to game disqualification to tournament expulsion depending on the circumstances and intent of the interfering party. Broken Machines: During the qualifying rounds, the broken game simply will no longer be used. All current scores remain valid; provided that the malfunction did not "inflate" them; "Deflation" of score is acceptable; though the "deflated" scores may be replayed or kept at the affected player(s)'s option. This option shall be made to any player(s) immediately upon discovery of the deflation and they will at that time have the option to keep their score or replay the affected game. Qualifications shall continue on identical games if available. During the Semi-final and Final rounds, the same rules apply to breakdowns as in the qualifying rounds with the following exception: The same game will be substituted for a broken game provided the new game is set up and working in a similar manner to the broken game. Game equivalency will be determined by the judges; with input from one representative player, selected by the judges, who has played the broken game and can compare it to the substituted game. The player shall play one game, or for 2 minutes (whichever is shortest) on the substitute game. The judges and the representative player will base their evaluations of the substituted game on the following criteria. Tilt sensitivity (Including Slam tilt) Game level and incline Flipper strength and alignment Proper operation of game The "feel" of the game The representative player will give the judges any input on differences between the games that he/she may see; the judges will then determine if game play may continue on; or if any scores for that game must be disqualified and new games played on the substitute game. Differences noted by players to the judges that are adjustment oriented, such as flipper alignment should be made and if need be another comparison game should be played until one game is determined to be an equal substitute.
