From: chrisg@world.std.com (Chris Guilmartin) Subject: PAPA 4 Results - A Division (detailed) Date: Tue, 8 Feb 1994 03:55:09 GMT Here is lots of detailed info on PAPA 4, A division. I wrote down almost everything I could. RGP was _very_ well represented in this tournament. I'll put info about other divisions in a separate post. A Division - Qualifying ----------------------- Total of scores on TZ, SF2, IJ, IJ, WO, CFTBL, TFTC, and JD (played in order). In millions, rounded to nearest million. 1. Hal Erickson 3248 2. Lyman Sheats 3081 3. Rick Stetta 3013 4. Dave Hegge 3012 5. Michael Gottlieb 2815 6. Fred Richardson 2702 7. Jason Werdrick 2661 8. Bowen Kerins 2618 9. Dan Wilson 2615 10. Alberto Santana 2595 11. Dale Rice 2575 12. Allan Vrooman 2551 13. Keith Johnson 2489 14. Leonard Moscaritolo 2412 15. Paul Madison 2196 16. Sean Joseph Grant 2107 17. Dave Stewart 2070 Comment: Very hectic qualifying late Saturday - it took a ridiculously long time, with much waiting, and thus the board changed a great deal late. Bowen posted his score late - he had been bumped off the board earlier. Lyman scared everyone by posting a 17B score Friday, only to have it taken away since most of it was due to a Wipe-Out (not WCS) software problem. [[ There were also problems with the software in one SF2 machine. It was giving 2,500,000,000 instead of 25,000,000 for the fifth Jackpot. ]] A Division Quarterfinals ------------------------ Groups: 2-15-16-17, 3-12-13-14, 4-9-10-11, 5-6-7-8 This and subsequent playoffs used the PAPA scoring system - 10-5-1-0 on each machine (ST:TNG, JD, Tommy) within each group of 4 players, using total score as a tiebreaker. (Sorry, I didn't get the point totals here) Results: 1. Hal Erickson (bye) 2. Dale Rice 3. Leonard Moscaritolo 4. Dave Stewart 5. Dan Wilson 6. Michael Gottlieb 7. Lyman Sheats 8. Paul Madison 9. Bowen Kerins A Division Semifinals --------------------- ST:TNG Judge Dredd Tommy Total Hal Erickson 10 1 5 16 Paul Madison 1 5 1 7 Bowen Kerins 5 10 10 25 Tommy ST:TNG Judge Dredd Total Dale Rice 1 1 10 12 Michael Gottlieb 5 5 5 15 Lyman Sheats 10 10 (3.9B!) 1 21 Judge Dredd ST:TNG Tommy Total Leonard Moscaritolo 10 1 5 16 Dave Stewart 5 10 10 25 Dan Wilson 1 5 1 7 So the finalists were: 1. Bowen Kerins 25 points 2. Dave Stewart 25 points 3. Lyman Sheats 21 points 4. Hal Erickson 16 points (score tiebreaker over Leonard Moscaritolo) Comment: Bowen placed first by score tiebreaker over Dave Stewart, helped by his 1.575 billion points on Tommy. It was the very last game to be completed in the semis, he was at center stage, and put on quite a show for the crowd. He was very animated, he danced along with the music, when on ball 3 he started the multiball to pass Hal's score and assure the win he walked off the stage, feigning disinterest in continuing, only to race back, save the game, and score another billion points or so. The crowd loved it. A Division Finals ----------------- ST:TNG ------ Hal Erickson 207M 0 points Lyman Sheats 308M 1 point Dave Stewart 725M 10 points Bowen Kerins 444M 5 points Judge Dredd ----------- [[ Judge Dredd was substituted for Popeye after all Popeye machines at the tournament exhibited severe mechanical malfunctions. Also, WCS was removed due to absurdly long game times. ]] Hal Erickson 104M 0 points (Disqualified) Lyman Sheats 191M 5 points Bowen Kerins 319M 10 points Dave Stewart 38M 1 point Comment: Hal was disqualified after he accidentally tilted Lyman's ball. After everyone else had finished, the game was manually reset to its original state and Lyman continued from where he was, but managed only a few million more. Tommy ----- Hal Erickson ? 0 points Lyman Sheats 252M 5 points Dave Stewart 140M 1 point Bowen Kerins 675M 10 points Comment: Again this game was marred by having to reset the machine, this time due to a malfunction. Dave Stewart shot the multiball start hole and stepped away from the machine, expecting multiball. Instead, though, the machine simply ejected the ball which then drained. Dave finished his game after the others were done knowing exactly what he had to do: he needed half a billion to become chanpion, anything less he would finish second. Final Results ------------- Champion Bowen Kerins 25 points 2nd Dave TRPA Stewart 12 points 3rd Lyman "Silk" Sheats 11 points 4th Hal "Tower of Power" Erickson 0 points Comment: The A playoffs were scheduled to take from noon to 6PM, but due to long play times on Tommy and the removal of World Championship Soccer they went very late. Quarterfinals took from 3:30 to 7:30 and the finals weren't done until the stroke of midnight. In the middle the Flippermania charity party went off as scheduled, causing a great deal of distraction to the players due to the loud music and the many show people. The finals outlasted the party, though, and for the final game on Tommy all other machines were off and everyone's attention was focused: Lyman, Dave, and Bowen could all be champion with a win. Here is lots of detailed results for PAPA 4, other than A division (Doubles, B, C, Womens, College, Junior). I wrote down all I could, sorry for the omissions and any inaccuracies - some of these were announced but not posted, and in other cases I can't read my writing. Joshua Sharpe From: sbb@panix.com (Steve Baumgarten) Subject: PAPA 4 late update Date: 21 Feb 94 18:17:37 Here are some late PAPA 4 stats that may be of interest: According to Steve Epstein, there were about 600 players at PAPA 4, making it by far the most successful of the PAPA tournaments thus far. He figures that about 150 people came in from out of state; I think this is very impressive, and it shows how well the regional tournaments were able to promote the "main event". All told, there were about 1100 entries in the tournament (this counts all divisions, including doubles). Obviously many people entered several times; many entered just once. I believe Steve has some r.g.p.'ers working on a statistical breakdown of the entries, and I'm sure one of them will be able to post it when it's ready. The coin drop for the practice machines for Friday and Saturday (they were all on free play on Sunday) came to about $1500; needless to say, there will be even more practice games next year, and many more video games, all of which will also be set for pay-to-play, rather than free play as they were this year. The "C" division had the biggest draw, followed by "B" and "A" in that order. Considering that the tournament was oriented toward the "A" division -- both in payout and in the nature of the tournament itself -- I think this is a very encouraging sign. There are obviously a lot of newbies and casual players out there, and the "C" division entries show that the non-pros enjoy competing just as much as the wizards do. PAPA 4 got more publicity than any other tournament, including wire stories on Reuters and A.P.; major stories in the Chicago Tribune and at least 3 of the 4 New York newspapers; a tournament recap (including scores) in USA Today; and extensive video coverage as well. Bowen, as winner of the "A" division, will represent PAPA this year at the ACME trade show, much as Lyman did last year. As I remember, Lyman got himself a free WMS game for his services as a representative of PAPA and world pinball champion; while I hope Bowen finds himself in the same position by the time ACME is over, I pray for his sake that WMS finds something to give him other than POPEYE... :-) I'll try to get some more PAPA 4 statistics, including regional tournament participation and the like, from Steve when I see him later this week.
