From: chris@restrac.com (Chris Guilmartin) Subject: PAPA 5 Detailed Results Date: 10 Feb 1995 04:56:51 GMT Sorry for the delay in posting this - I've been recovering :-) I also apologize for any inaccuracies or omissions; all scores were written down furtively on scraps of paper. I got detailed qualifying and finals game results for A,B,C and Womens divisions only, and a list of the winners for Doubles and Junior. Steve Baumgarten will probably be supplying the other divisions' results. It is amazing how dramatic the tournament was - A, B, and C divisions all came down to the last ball of the last player on the last machine, and were all won on a score tiebreaker! All scores are in millions. Review of the tournament format for for A, B, C, and Womens Divisions ===================================================================== All qualifiers played Maverick, Twilight Zone, Street Fighter 2, Star Trek TNG, World Cup Soccer, Freddy Kreuger, Demolition Man, and Tommy (in order except in some cases of backups due to malfunction). All scores were totaled and the top 17 qualified for the playoffs, with numbers 18, 19, and 20 as alternates. The playoffs consisted of head-to-head matches in groups of 3 or 4, on Shadow, Shaq Attaq, Frankenstein, and Dirty Harry. PAPA points are used for scoring: 10 for the highest score within a group, 5 for second, 1 for third, and 0 for last. The top qualifier gets a bye for the first round. Everyone else splits into four groups as follows: 2-15-16-17 3-12-13-14 4-9-10-11 5-6-7-8. The top 8 players with the most PAPA points advance (along with the top qualifier) to the semifinals, where they compete in groups of three. The top 4 players with the most PAPA points in the semifinals advance to the finals. Ties are broken by adding the scores of the 4 playoff games. C Division ========== 1. Nick McKinney 3647 Semifinalist (2nd place last year) 2. Marcio Silva 3227 Showed up late, did not compete in playoffs 3. Jason Provost 3025 Semifinalist 4. Chris Guilmartin 2975 Semifinalist 5. Schwarz 838M over Sebastian 652M for third place. Going into the final game, Frankenstein, Steve Walker was 10 points behind Darren Kammitzer and in order to win the championship needed both to win Frankenstein and for Kammitzer to finish last. Kammitzer, playing third, failed to get the 100M points he needed on his final ball to get to third place and lock up the championship. When Walker, playing last, stepped up he knew he needed to get 200M+ points to become the champion, and proceededto have 1 /12 billion point ball. It's interesting that the champion and second place finisher barely qualified - 17th and 15th place respectively. Kammitzer has pinball in his family, though: Roger Sharpe is his uncle. B Division ========== 1. Mats Anderson 4492 Finalist - finished 3rd 2. Martin Keates 4321 3. John Hurd 4201 4. Alexis Keldermans 3956 Finalist - finished 4th 5. Bengtsson had a great third ball on Frankenstein to take 5 PAPA points, falling just short of winning the game and clinching the championship. He again fell short when, playing third on his final ball on Dirty Harry, he failed to get the 100M he needed to finish third and become the champion. Nardini needed 200M+ points on the final ball of the match to win the game and the championship on a score tiebreaker. Womens Division =============== 1. Alysa Parks 3050 Finalist - finished third 2. Natalie Baker 2934 Finalist - Champion (qualified 5th last year) 3. Laurie Meisel 1993 Semifinalist 4. Wendy Jankowitz 1903 Semifinalist 5. Jacki Hays 1752 Semifinalist 6. Last year's champion Ellen Frankel came close to repeating, but Natalie Baker was in control in the clutch, winning the majority of her games on the final ball (including Shadow and Shaq Attaq in the finals). She clinched the championship on her third ball on Dirty Harry, never giving Ellen a chance to take it away from her. A Division ========== 1. Lyman Sheats 12256 Finalist - finished 2nd (3rd in '94, 1st in '93) 2. Paul Madison 8743 Finalist - Champion (semifinalist last year) 3. Dale Rice 6996 Semifinalist (semifinalist also last year) 4. Rob Chesnavich 6802 Semifinalist 5. Glenn Wilson 6548 Semifinalist 6. Juniet Benoit 5850 7. Jason Werdrick 5654 8. Neil Shatz 5523 Finalist - finished fourth 9. Kenjii Ishii 5487 10. Bowen Kerins 5432 Semifinalist (Champion last year) 11. Alan Vrooman 5345 12. Kevin Martin 5278 13. Alberto Santana 5226 Semifinalist 14. Dan Wilson 5087 15. Dave Hegge 5077 Finalist - finished third 16. Dave Stewart 4782 (2nd place last year) 17. Kai Bateman 4599 18. Sean Grant 4554 19. J.S. Cartagena 4404 20. Rick Stetta 4382 At midnight Saturday Bowen (on the bubble at 17 at the time) was bumped out. While simultaneously making one final qualifying attempt and competing in A doubles, he requalified at 4:30 AM, sadly bumping his friend Sean. Lyman Sheats almost ran away with it early, winning both Shadow and Shaq Attaq on his final ball to open up a big lead. But when it came down to the final game, on Dirty Harry, Lyman was going second and was no longer in the driver's seat. He didn't know for certain what score he needed to win the championship; when his final ball drained he was still in position to regain the title he lost last year, but the door was open for Paul Madison. Dave Hegge then heightened the suspense with a monster ball that was very impressive but not that meaningful - he had third place in the tournament locked in by that time. Paul Madison started his final ball with 368M, knowing he needed to get 400M points on the ball to tie Lyman on PAPA points and win the championship on tiebreaker.
